* Definition of a specialist sexual violence prevention and support service:

specialist sexual violence service is an organisation that provides dedicated, trauma-informed support to people who have experienced sexual violence, regardless of when the abuse occurred or whether it has been reported to authorities.

In clear terms, such a service typically:

  • Supports survivors of rape, sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, and other forms of sexual violence
  • Provides emotional and practical support, centred on the victim-survivor’s needs, choices, and safety
  • Works using a trauma-informed, victim-survivor-led approach, recognising the impacts of trauma and avoiding re-harm
  • Offers confidential, non-judgemental spaceswhere victim-survivors are believed and supported

Depending on the organisation, services may include:

  • One-to-one counselling or therapeutic support
  • Independent advocacy (e.g. support with reporting, police, courts, healthcare, housing, or benefits)
  • Prevention activities including school based programs, education and other programs developed to prevent sexual violence.

Membership Benefits

  • Access to QSAN tools and resources and attendance at meetings, training and events.
  • Contribution to systemic advocacy and advocacy positions relating to sexual violence and sector funding issues at a state and national level.

It is the responsibility of Member Services to ensure that their membership is paid in full for the current year and all workers employed by the Member Service are aware of the existence and function of QSAN.
