This year, over 79 victim-survivors participated in 10 workshops across Queensland, from Logan to Redlands and Brisbane to the Whitsundays, producing art reflecting the Sexual Violence Awareness Month theme: No More Silence, Prevent Sexual Violence.

The theme reminds us that preventing sexual violence is everyone’s responsibility. Our 22-specialist frontline counselling services work with victim-survivors every day who have been silenced by their abuser, their own families, institutions and communities.

When we break the silence, we make the violence visible, allow connections to be made and communities to be strengthened. No More Silence is not about expecting victim survivors to speak if they are not ready or it is not safe but believing them when they choose to share their experience. It is about creating the space for respectful conversations, respecting boundaries and creating safety. It is the responsibility of all us to challenge the attitudes and behaviours that allow sexual violence to occur in order to prevent it.

Today, QSAN was proud to bring together victim-sur Today, QSAN was proud to bring together victim-survivors, specialist sexual violence services, Members of Parliament, sector representatives and supporters at Queensland Parliament House to mark Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM) and view artworks created by victim-survivors..

We extend our sincere thanks to The Hon. @ajstoker for joining us and speaking to the vital role of specialist sexual violence services in supporting victim-survivors, as well as the importance of collective action to break the silence around sexual violence.

A particularly powerful part of today's event was hearing directly from victim-survivors, who shared their reflections on what this year's SVAM theme ‘no more silence, prevent sexual violence’ means to them. Their words were moving, insightful and a powerful reminder of why survivor voices must remain at the centre of conversations about prevention, support and meaningful change.

Our sincere thanks to everyone who joined us today and contributed to this important conversation.

Queensland's human rights and anti-discrimination framework is currently under review, and QSAN is calling for stronger recognition and protection of the rights of sexual violence victim-survivors.

In our submission, QSAN is advocating for:

• Explicit recognition of victim-survivors' rights in the Human Rights Act 2019, particularly within criminal justice processes.
• Stronger protections for victim-survivors when interacting with public authorities, including their rights to safety, privacy, dignity and accessible information.
• Accessible, trauma-informed and culturally safe complaints processes that minimise further harm.
• Specialist training, clear guidance and accountability to support effective implementation of human rights protections.
• The retention of positive duties to prevent sexual harassment and discrimination, supported by appropriate resources and oversight.

We encourage specialist sexual assault services, domestic and family violence services, and other organisations working to address gendered violence to contribute to this important review.

Sector expertise and frontline experiences are essential to understanding how Queensland's human rights laws operate in practice and where stronger protections are needed.

Submissions close Friday 30 October 2026.

✏️ Two Hours in the Dark, A Lifetime in the Light

They tried to take it in the dark.
I found disbelief instead of help,
shame that was never mine to carry.
So I took the pieces and built something else.
 CONSENT, spelled out in red.
 JUSTICE, pieced back together.
 FREEDOM - not given. Built.

This morning, the QSAN team had the privilege of a This morning, the QSAN team had the privilege of attending a beautiful art exhibition hosted by @wwildsvp, showcasing artworks created by victim-survivors during Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM) workshops.

We were deeply moved not only by the artworks on display, but by the opportunity to hear directly from the artists about their creative journeys, what their artwork meant to them, and the significance of SVAM in their lives.

Their reflections were incredibly powerful, highlighting the importance of creating safe, supportive spaces where victim-survivors can express themselves and have their voices heard.

A heartfelt thank you to the artists for generously sharing their creativity, perspectives and experiences with us, and to the wonderful team at WWILD for bringing everyone together and supporting such a meaningful initiative.
