QSAN stands with victim-survivors and calls again QSAN stands with victim-survivors and calls again for an absolute privilege in Queensland to protect the confidentiality of rape/sexual violence counselling notes. These notes do not assist determinations about the commission of a crime, but are used to intimidate and undermine the credibility of victim-survivors and inhibit their ability to obtain professional counselling support. As stated in a recent article by news.com.au, "The trend [of subpoenaing confidential rape counselling notes] has become so severe that in some states police are now warning victims of rape and sexual abuse not to access any counselling services until the criminal trial is over, as there is no way for police to guarantee that their private counselling records will be protected. That may mean a wait of two to three years with no counselling at a time it is needed most... "Other survivors have told news.com.au that they stopped accessing counselling all together once their notes were subpoenaed as they no longer felt therapy was safe." #AbsolutePrivilege #SexualViolence
𝗦𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁. As 𝗦𝗲𝘅𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁. As highlighted in this recent article in The Saturday Paper, the draft feedback from consultations on the Second Action Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children has prompted serious concerns that sexual violence is once again being overshadowed within broader gendered violence responses. QSAN CEO Angela Lynch told The Saturday Paper: "We know it's on the rise. The sector has said it's on the rise for the last two decades. The violence is getting worse, it is pushing down into younger cohorts, the technology is really fuelling the ability of predators to find victims, and it's also increasing the levels of perpetration because they can hurt more victims through that use of technology." Sexual violence requires dedicated policy, investment and accountability. It cannot continue to be treated as an adjunct to other issues if Australia is serious about ending gender-based violence. QSAN is proud to stand alongside organisations acr QSAN is proud to stand alongside organisations across Australia in supporting this joint statement calling for sustainable investment in specialist domestic, family and sexual violence services. Without adequate funding, too many victim-survivors are unable to access the support they need, when they need it. Specialist, community-led and culturally safe services save lives, but they cannot continue to meet growing demand without governments investing at the scale required. Across Queensland, QSAN continues to hear from member services are telling us about growing waitlists and increasing demand for specialist sexual violence support. They are also highlighting a significant gap in specialist support for children, particularly younger children. As Queensland's Sexual Violence Peak Body, QSAN joins this call for governments to ensure specialist services are properly resourced to deliver prevention, early intervention, crisis response and long-term healing and recovery. #EndSexualViolence #SexualViolence #StandTogether #PrimaryPrevention #Queensland
No one should have to choose between homelessness No one should have to choose between homelessness and violence. Yet for too many people, that's the reality. This 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸, we sat down with Kirsty and Dani from @zigzagsupportcentre, our member organisation. Zig Zag do incredible work in the wider Brisbane region, providing housing and sexual violence support service for young women, trans and gender diverse young people aged 12 to 25. Kirsty and Dani walked us through the realities they see every day: young people forced to leave their homes due to violence, the increased vulnerability that comes with homelessness, and the life-changing difference that specialist, trauma-informed sexual violence and housing support can make. Last week, QSAN attended a solemn Red Rose rally o Last week, QSAN attended a solemn Red Rose rally outside Queensland Parliament, recognising and honouring 13 women, men and children who had died in Queensland as a result of Domestic and Family Violence (DFV), since the last rally. It is a horrific number. 🚨 Intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a high risk indicator of DFV lethality and QSAN services work with victims every day to help prioritise safe outcomes. It was an incredible privilege to hear from Dr Heiss in a beautiful setting, immerse ourselves in her deep cultural knowledge and learn about Dr Heiss's approach to writing. The Sexual Violence Review Board wants to hear from victim-survivors and specialist support workers to better understand experiences of providing digital evidence during the criminal justice process. You can take part regardless of whether your matter progressed to court. If you're a specialist support worker or service, please consider sharing this opportunity with people you support and, where appropriate, assisting them before, during or after their conversation with the Review Board. On Thursday night, QSAN attended the Queensland la On Thursday night, QSAN attended the Queensland launch of "Schooling Misogyny" and heard from one of the co-authors, Dr. Stephanie Wescott. Dr. Wescott is a feminist lecturer and researcher in the Faculty of Education at Monash University, focusing on gender, schooling, and violence prevention. Her research examines the influence of misogynistic and manosphere ideologies in educational settings, school-based gendered violence, and the institutional conditions that shape how gendered harms are recognised, responded to, and prevented in schools. The other co-author, Professor Steve Roberts from the School of Social Sciences, is an internationally recognised expert on boys' and men's masculinity practices and inequalities in young people's transitions to adulthood. We learned that female teachers have faced sexualised harassment, abuse, and violence from adolescent boys for decades, with teachers historically required to absorb this treatment. The manosphere has intensified this issue, and "Schooling Misogyny" places the experiences of female teachers at the forefront, positioning education as a critical site for gendered violence prevention. Wescott and Roberts advocate for accountability and evidence-based whole-school responses, finding hope in previously siloed education and gendered violence activism to coordinate and collaborate efforts.
